"People, Press and Politics"

This weekend I had the opportunity to participate in an amazing experience. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) held a four day conference for their members in Washington to discuss the connection with "People, Press and Politics". The conference consisted of different workshops that discussed the different aspects of public relations and their role in politics. This was an amazing opportunity for me to embark on because I learned so much about the field I want to go in. I would like to do some campaign management and political event planning during some point after graduation. I was able to meet Bob Lehrman (Al Gore’s former Chief Speech Writer), Jim Margolis (Obama’s key campaign strategist) and many others.
One important lesson I took with me from the workshops is be assertive when career opportunities come across because in the field of politics it can become competitive.
White House Younger Women's Call
On September 29th I was granted with the opportunity to sit on a conference call with The White House of Public Engagement (OPE) for their monthly Younger Women’s Outreach call. There were white house representatives on the call such as Vice President Biden’s secretary also an intern who works directly with Michelle Obama and her staff. The callers consist of different groups who have an interest in advocating for young women in the community from all sectors consisting of non-profit organizations and small college clubs that advocate for female students on their campuses. The people hosting the call used it as an opportunity to brief us on some of the work the Obama administration is doing for the young women’s community offering outreach and workshop ideas.
On the call we discussed what the different groups were doing in terms of informing women on health issues and complications associated with higher education. The main topic of the discussion was healthy relationships; not tolerating sexual assault or domestic violence. The administration expresses the concern in the perception of a healthy relationship, not only in college students but middle school students as well. They revealed some alarming statics taken from a poll of six graders where more than 10% of the students (male and female) answered yes on questions such as “is it ok to force your girlfriend to have sex with if you have spent money on them“and “is it ok for you place your hands on a partner in a relationship if you financially support them”. The administration discussed we have to change the mind frame in young adults and promote healthy relationships. As we all know personal relationships have a major effect on the way we function professionally, academically and emotionally.
I appreciate these monthly calls and applaud the White House in their efforts to be engaged with community groups throughout the country.
