What does the council do ?

Being apart of student government I help others in anyway I can. Me and other members of the council volunteer some of our school time to help in different departments of the school. Some help in the office others in classrooms. My student government secretary Stephanie Diaz and I have been mentoring a 9th grade class. Since September we have been helping them create resumes and efficient study habits. We have lessons on colleges, the different types of college campuses, classes and clubs. We have been taking them on local campus tours; so far we have visited Baruch College and City College . We encourage the children to do their work, and think about what they want in their future. When walking in the classroom the first hallway has timelines built by the students, expressing the goals they have and the step by step process they need to follow in order to complete their goal. We always give out our emails so we can be able to communicate with the students outside of the classroom with any work they may need extra help with. Coming from a school in a more urban environment these are skills that should be instilled in the students at an early age so they do not become vulnerable to distractions. They have their goals and now understand they can not part take in certain activities if they want to make their dreams a reality. I enjoy working with the students because I feel as though it is my responsibility as student government president to inspire the students behind me so when I come back after college they are working just as hard as me and doing even better. Simple things like creating gmail’s for all the students or bigger things like making them do an essay for every event we partake in I always feel as though bettering their future makes my present feel worth living.

** NEW YEAR **

uploaded-file-47807Going into the New Year allocates you to reflect on decisions you have made in the ending year. A commitment I have made that I do not regret is joining student government in my school. Attending a small school there are many disadvantages; joining student government was very important because this was the first year we have ever had a student government in my school. Going into the elections I never intended to become the president is was a decision that was made later on after becoming a representative. Despite this year being a trial run the elections were intense. I only had one component for this position, and at first it was to close to call. We even needed tie breaker questions. When creating my speech I refrained from telling the council members about what changes we were going to make from the school but by telling them what I have done in the past that makes me qualified for the position. Just because this was the first year of student government does not mean we have to deprive the school of a president who lacks the qualifications. Once I won my position I knew I made a commitment to the students I represented and the facility I helped. I make it my obligation to email students to keep them updated and participate in all school events so my peers can see my dedication.

As we go into the New Year I want everyone work hard towards achieving their goal because coming into the next year you want no regrets.

But continue to “Stay a Leader and Remember Peace = Improvement “

I CALL IT SMART THINKING ………..

vote.jpgI am sure by now I do not have to say my career goal is to be a politician. Part of being a politician is campaigning. I am a high school senior saving for college so I don’t have money for a campaign. Instead, I use the resources that I do have. I posted this picture on several peoples’ myspace pages and at the bottom I wrote: VOTE RAVEN MAYOR 2021, I RUN THE CITY. Some people call it silly, but I call it “smart thinking.” I know I am 14 years early, but better late then never.

Great Minds.......

pardon.jpg

"They are not attacking me because I am a women they are attacking me because I am ahead." - Hillary Clinton

When people say things I assume they speak without the thought that it can impact the world and become quoted. It seems as though it is a matter of common sense. A great mind thinks of great things. No one says, “I want to make a famous quote so let me take a pen and paper and think of inspirational words.” People learn through life experiences. People speak as a response to their situation. Besides Hillary being a strong presidential candidate, this quote proves that Hillary wants to end the gap between facts and ignorance. Some people may think the only reason other candidates are being tough on her is because she is a female. As an educated woman, she knows that if she was not a strong candidate, or not in the lead, she would be the least of their worries and would work much harder on their campaign than ways to damage her. Hillary is able to bridge that gap and set aside that idea that they are "picking" on her. That is a redundant statement considering we are talking about a presidential campaign and not a fourth grade graduation. I can not imagine any of these adults deciding to "pick" on one another. A great mind encourages other great minds with their ideas. I am not sure about you, but Hillary definitely goes quoted in my book. Ladies be educated enough to NOT use your gender as an excuse but look at the bigger picture. We are the competition.

All about me

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Hello, my name is Raven and I am the President of Student Government in my school. Most people take this position as a good title or an excellent source of reference for their resume. My reasons are none of the above. Being an inner city student at times can have disadvantages. Many times people work too hard to make sure you can pass a test but not not hard enough to ensure you know how to write a resume or speak well during a job interview. These are things I know are essential and I plan to be that change in my school and it is a change I would like to see in the world. I am glad I put my self in a position where this can be accomplished and working with Girls In Government gives me an even better opportunity to be heard.
