What does the council do ?

Being apart of student government I help others in anyway I can. Me and other members of the council volunteer some of our school time to help in different departments of the school. Some help in the office others in classrooms. My student government secretary Stephanie Diaz and I have been mentoring a 9th grade class. Since September we have been helping them create resumes and efficient study habits. We have lessons on colleges, the different types of college campuses, classes and clubs. We have been taking them on local campus tours; so far we have visited Baruch College and City College . We encourage the children to do their work, and think about what they want in their future. When walking in the classroom the first hallway has timelines built by the students, expressing the goals they have and the step by step process they need to follow in order to complete their goal. We always give out our emails so we can be able to communicate with the students outside of the classroom with any work they may need extra help with. Coming from a school in a more urban environment these are skills that should be instilled in the students at an early age so they do not become vulnerable to distractions. They have their goals and now understand they can not part take in certain activities if they want to make their dreams a reality. I enjoy working with the students because I feel as though it is my responsibility as student government president to inspire the students behind me so when I come back after college they are working just as hard as me and doing even better. Simple things like creating gmail’s for all the students or bigger things like making them do an essay for every event we partake in I always feel as though bettering their future makes my present feel worth living.
