The three H's , friend or foe for female candidates ?

Most bloggers tell you their opinions on situations and leave you to disagree, agree or simply read for enjoyment. I have chosen to take a different approach and decided that I want to give my readers ideologies that will help them observe politics in a different way and come up with their own conclusion. It could be the conservative in me that makes me eager to enlighten people but as a political science major I have learned there is not only one answer to a question, there are so many logical possibilities.

Let’s begin with a guessing game, I have hair, a hemline and husband! Who am I? If you thought anything along the lines of female, women or wife you are absolutely right. Unfortunately there is a theory portrayed through the media that when women run for office these should be there main focus especially if the candidate running is the wife of a politician. During Elizabeth Dole’s run for president in 2000 nearly 62% of the print stories on Dole made multiple references to her husband, Bob Dole. A columnist for the Detroit News wrote that Dole’s “public speaking style looks and sounds like Tammy Faye Baker meet the Home Shopping Network “. Elizabeth graduated from two Ivy League institutions and they compare her to the “Home Shopping Network “, perplexing if you ask me!

The list of female politicians who have been affected by the three H’s in media stories is ongoing but in regards to gaining more votes does the discussion of their hair, hemline and husbands hurt or help them; friend or foe?
